Finding a good credit
repair service can be challenging. Not only do you have
to be weary of scammers, but also, consider the cost. Is it cost
effective to pay someone $50.00 a month for upwards of a year to
improve your credit reports?
Well, that depends. How bad is your credit and what are the odds
that the negative items can be deleted.
Remember, a credit
repair company doesn't hold any special powers with the
credit bureaus or collection agencies that report information about
you. What they do have is knowledge and laws. Those same tools can
be used by you to remove negative yet unverifiable information.
Perhaps the most challenging part of finding a good credit repair
service is knowing what to expect. You need to be realistic otherwise
it will be a disappointment - especially if you have unreal expectations.
On the one hand the FTC
warns us that there is no such thing as credit repair and
that items negative in nature cannot be removed. On the other side,
you have the credit industry, including most credit repair attorneys
telling us a more broad truth... That credit
repair is very possible and just because an item is negative
(judgment, tax
lien, collection account etc.), doesn't mean its accurate.
Negative credit usually contains lots of errors
from reporting the date closed, opened, charged off or sold. Reporting
incorrect dates of last payments or fees charged. There are a lot
of small details that make up the entire item sitting on your credit
reports - ruining your credit history. It's an old played out saying
but "prove it or remove it" is the truth and its the law.
So what can a credit repair service do for
you? A lot of foot work that you may find tedious and boring.
Because they do this type of work everyday, all day, they tend to
have quicker results than you may get if you did the credit repair
yourself. Finding one that you can count on is the challenge. Fortunately
there are a few credit repair
companies out there that are pretty good... As long as you have
real expectations like mentioned above.
If the monthly fee can be justified by getting
lots of negative items removed, then it makes sense to hire a credit
repair company. If there's only a few items to work on then perhaps
you'll be better off being your own best
credit repair service!
