If you are in debt, not paying your bills or recently had your accounts sent to a collection agency or collection attorney, your social media channels could be setting you up.
Many people fail to realize that their information on sites like Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Linkedin and other outlets that share information, could be visible to debt collectors – and they can “Google You” and find plenty of information. In fact, they may even find out your address, cell number or even how you enjoy your lifestyle if you’ve been bragging about it on your social profiles.
Unless you’ve set your accounts to private, Google may have cached snapshots of posts you’ve done which could include private information. I know just from looking at my Facebook profile that I have about 1300 friends, 95% of them I dont know, and their phone numbers and employment ARE listed. Luckily, I dont need that information so they’re safe, but imagine a sneaky debt collector who may set up a profile to discover who your friends, family and employer are.
If you run a business profile like me, it’s easy to add hundreds of friends without knowing who they are. This can also apply if a debt collector wants to get in your inner circle and see what you are up to. If you have social profiles and are behind on your bills or in financial trouble, you may want to be very careful of the information you supply.
